Cartem drum decanters are primarily used with asphalt mixing plants in remote territories where bitumen in bulk supply is not available or regular supplies are unreliable and therefore bitumen stored in drums is used as an alternative.

The Type-4DD unit is intended to work alongside interconnected bulk storage tanks so that once the reservoir is full a pump automatically transfers the bitumen to be stored and heated to process temperature.

The 4DD is the most widely used machine in the world for such an application and is capable of producing up to 4 tonnes per hour.

Cartem have also developed the twin track Type-6DD which is capable of achieving 6 tonnes per hour.
