Cartem  About Our Company

Cartem is the foremost specialist manufacturer of Bitumen Handling Systems in the United Kingdom, and the following pages illustrate the wide range of proven equipment produced by the company.

Synonymous with quality, safety and reliability, Cartem will continue to provide customers throughout the world with unrivalled expertise and advice on all bitumen handling related requirements.

For more than 50 years Cartem Ltd has specialised in the design and manufacture of bitumen handling equipment, from the early static oil-fired tanks to the latest state-of-the-art energy efficient storage farms.

In the 1970's and 80's with ever increasing demand for its products and new product development, the company entered a major growth phase, acquiring new manufacturing facilities in south east England. New opportunities in export markets presented themselves and Cartem expanded its product range to include Mobile Storage Tanks, Bulk Transporters, Heat Exchangers and Drum Decanters.

While Cartem's market share of tanks supplied to producers of asphalt and all leading UK and European asphalt plant manufacturers was steadily increasing, the trend towards the use of modified bitumens and emulsions was on the increase.

To meet this growing demand, Cartem acquired the Municipal Appliance Company and with its range of heavy duty mixers gained access to industries such as mastic asphalt production.

In 1986, Cartem took over the Ashurst Sprayer Company, thereby complementing its volume of supply with a full range of surface dressing equipment.

Ashurst was renowned for its famous 'swirl' jet, which for many years has been the industry standard, providing top class distribution and quality of spray pattern.

The continuous development programme of Ashurst sprayers under Cartem has resulted in the introduction of new units with safer and more efficient spraybars.

In 2006, Cartem was itself acquired by Phoenix Transworld Ltd, the leading UK manufacturer of mobile, transportable and fixed asphalt plant ranging in capacity from 40 to 400 T/h.

All sales, service and manufacturing of Cartem products and equipment was transferred to the group headquarters in Leicester.
